You know the game. Not the studio. You have probably seen a Rise of Kingdoms ad. You might have played it, built an alliance or lost a weekend defending territory. But could you name the developer?
It is Legou Games, based in Chengdu. For a Western audience, that is the interesting part: a familiar game and a much less familiar company.
THE DEVELOPER BEHIND RISE OF KINGDOMS.
According to Legou’s official company history, the studio was founded in January 2017. Rise of Kingdoms launched in April 2018, followed by a major international rollout across 142 countries and regions that September. Those are company-reported historical milestones, not current audience or revenue figures.
The founding team was not learning development from scratch. Its previous experience included mobile games based on Iron Man and The Amazing Spider-Man. Global-market experience preceded the studio’s own identity.
Legou developed Rise of Kingdoms; Lilith is identified as its operator in the company history. Keeping the developer and publisher distinct matters when we discuss where successful games actually come from.
SPECIALISATION IS A STRATEGIC CHOICE.
Rise of Kingdoms combines kingdom-building with real-time troop movement and battles. That gives players decisions to make on the battlefield, rather than only timers to manage. SWAY’s interpretation is that the studio’s strength lies in understanding a specific player experience deeply, not simply following a successful category.
Specialisation also creates exposure. A successful strategy game offers breathing room, but it cannot guarantee the next hit or protect a studio from changing expectations.
WHAT WESTERN PUBLISHERS SHOULD INVESTIGATE.
The Chinese profile that prompted this piece describes employees leaving on time. That is an anecdotal workplace account, not independently established company-wide policy. Revenue estimates, salary claims and blanket claims about overtime are excluded from our factual conclusions.
Still, the story raises a useful management question: how much overtime is unavoidable, and how much reflects decisions made too late? It also challenges an industry research habit. English-language visibility is not a reliable measure of development capability.
