What if Netflix started with gamers?

Imagine building a game business with a community already showing up to watch people play.

That is a useful starting point for understanding Huya.

Not because it is “China’s Netflix.” It isn’t.

But because its move from gaming livestreams into publishing raises a question Western entertainment companies should recognise: how much does your existing audience actually help you build a games business?

Huya’s new global R&D headquarters in Foshan, near Guangzhou, provides the news peg.

The project’s reported investment: RMB2 billion.

But the building is not the transformation. The business inside it is.

Huya has been expanding into game distribution, in-game item sales, advertising and publishing, while exploring internal development.

In its latest quarterly results, game-related services, advertising and other revenue accounted for 36.7% of total revenue.

Important distinction: that is a combined reporting category, not publishing revenue alone.

Huya points to Goose Goose Duck mobile as an example of its content-led publishing model.

For Western publishers, this changes the partner-selection conversation.

A platform that helps people discover a game may also help publish it, build its community and support its ongoing operation.

Those capabilities need evaluating separately.

An audience does not automatically make someone a good publisher. A headquarters does not prove a successful development pipeline.

And none of this establishes that Huya has succeeded where Netflix has failed.

The useful comparison is the starting point: a community organised around gaming, rather than an assumption that an entertainment audience will become a gaming audience.

Before your next China launch, ask what your prospective partner can actually deliver beyond visibility.

SOURCES AND EDITORIAL NOTE.

The 36.7% revenue share and description of Goose Goose Duck mobile come from Huya’s unaudited second-quarter 2026 results, for the quarter ended 30 June. The reporting category combines game-related services, advertising and other revenue. It is not a standalone measure of publishing revenue or profit.

The reported RMB2 billion headquarters investment and opening on 13 October come from Foshan Media Group’s opening report. The Netflix question is an editorial comparison of starting audiences, not evidence of Huya outperforming Netflix, an affiliation or a claim that Netflix’s games business has failed. Strategic conclusions are SWAY’s interpretation.
